Can You Grow Beetroot From Beetroot?

Published in Gardening 2 mins read

No, you cannot typically grow an entirely new beetroot bulb directly from another beetroot bulb through cuttings in a traditional indoor gardening sense. However, you can regrow the leafy greens.

Regrowing Beet Greens

While you won't get a new beetroot root, you can regrow beetroot greens from the top of a beetroot. Here’s how:

  1. Cut the Top: Slice off the top portion (about 4 centimeters) of a beetroot.
  2. Place in Water: Put the cut side down in a shallow dish with enough water to cover the bottom.
  3. Wait for Growth: Place the dish in a sunny location. Change the water every few days.
  4. New Greens Emerge: New leaves will sprout from the top in a few days.

These regrown beet greens are edible and can be used in salads or as a cooked vegetable.

Growing Beetroot from Seed

To grow an actual beetroot root, you need to start from seed. The beetroot plant will then produce a new bulb.

Why This Works (and Doesn't)

The beet greens regrow because the top portion of the beetroot contains the plant's crown where the vegetative buds are located. These buds are capable of producing new leafy growth. The root portion, however, lacks these buds in a form readily available for regrowth of the entire plant.
