How to Grow Beetroot from Seed Indoors

Published in Gardening 2 mins read

Growing beetroot from seed indoors is easy! Start by sowing seeds in small containers filled with high-quality seed-starting mix.

Getting Started

  1. Choose your containers: Small pots or seed trays work well. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
  2. Select your seed starting mix: Opt for a high-quality, well-draining seed-starting mix. Avoid using garden soil directly, as it can be too dense and compacted for seedlings.
  3. Sow the seeds: Plant two to three beet seeds about a half-inch deep in each container. Space containers appropriately to allow for growth.

Seedling Care

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Light: Beetroot seedlings need plenty of light. Place containers in a sunny location, or supplement with grow lights for at least 12 hours a day.
  • Thinning: Once seedlings emerge (usually in 5-8 days), thin them to one strong seedling per container. This prevents overcrowding and allows for optimal growth.

Transplanting

After a few more weeks, your beetroot seedlings will be strong enough to transplant outdoors. The benefit of starting indoors is that transplanting is easy, as you won't disturb the roots.

Tips for Success

  • Use high-quality seeds for better germination rates.
  • Maintain consistent warmth (around 65-75°F or 18-24°C) for optimal growth.
  • Regularly check for pests and diseases.
