How to Grow Beetroot from Store Bought?

Published in Gardening 2 mins read

It is possible to regrow beetroot greens from store-bought beets, but regrowing the beetroot root itself is unlikely.

Here's how to regrow beetroot greens from a store-bought beetroot:

  1. Select Beets: Choose beets that have a healthy-looking top portion (the part where the greens were attached).
  2. Cut the Beetroot Top: Cut the top off the beetroot, leaving about 5-6 inches of the beet attached to the top portion where the leaves were sprouting. This helps preserve potential new growth.
  3. Place in Water: Place the beetroot top in a shallow dish of water, with the cut side down. Ensure the bottom of the beet is submerged, but the top remains above the water level to prevent rotting.
  4. Sunlight and Water Changes: Place the dish in a sunny location and change the water every 1-2 days to keep it fresh.
  5. New Growth: In a few days, you should see new leaves sprouting from the top.
  6. Planting (Optional): Once the roots have developed and the greens have grown, you can transplant the beetroot top into a pot with soil. This will allow the greens to grow more vigorously. Remember that while the greens will continue to grow, the beetroot itself will not regenerate. You can feed the plant to help new leaves to sprout.

Important Considerations:

  • You are primarily regrowing the greens, not the beetroot root itself. While the greens are edible and can be used in salads or cooked, the original beetroot will likely not produce another full-sized beet.
  • The success rate can vary depending on the condition of the store-bought beetroot.
