How to Plant Leeks?

Published in Gardening 2 mins read

To plant leeks effectively, create deep holes and space them properly for healthy growth.

Here’s a detailed guide on planting leeks:

1. Preparing the Soil and Planting Area:

  • Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
  • Ensure the soil is loose and free of rocks or debris.

2. Creating Planting Holes:

  • Make a row of holes using a large dibber or the handle of a trowel. These holes should be approximately 15cm (6 inches) deep and 5cm (2 inches) wide. The deep planting method encourages the development of long, white shanks.

3. Spacing the Holes:

  • Space the holes 15–20cm (6–8 inches) apart for standard leek varieties.
  • If you're planting baby leeks, reduce the spacing to 10cm (4 inches) apart.
  • Allow 30cm (1 foot) between rows to provide adequate space for growth and cultivation.

4. Planting the Leek Seedlings:

  • Carefully place each leek seedling into a hole.
  • Instead of backfilling the holes with soil immediately, gently water each seedling. The water will wash enough soil around the roots to settle them in place. You can gradually fill in the holes with soil as the leeks grow.

5. Watering and Maintenance:

  • Water the newly planted leeks thoroughly.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged, especially during dry periods.
  • As the leeks grow, you can "earth up" the plants by gently pulling soil around the stems to blanch them, resulting in longer white shanks.

By following these steps, you can successfully plant leeks and enjoy a bountiful harvest.
