How Do You Measure Shoulder Depth?

Published in Garment Measurement 1 min read

Measuring shoulder depth involves using rigid devices like rulers to find the vertical distance from your high shoulder point to the shoulder/armhole point. This measurement is often used in pattern making and garment construction to ensure a proper fit.

Here are the steps to measure shoulder depth precisely:

  1. Position the first ruler: Place a rigid device such as a ruler at your high shoulder point.
  2. Extend the first ruler: Extend this ruler over your shoulder line.
  3. Ensure parallel alignment: Make sure the ruler is parallel to the floor.
  4. Use a second ruler: Take a second ruler.
  5. Measure the depth: Use the second ruler to measure the depth between the first ruler (which is parallel to the floor) and the shoulder/armhole point.
  6. Identify the measurement: This measured depth is your Shoulder Depth.

This method helps capture the vertical drop from the peak of the shoulder to where the shoulder meets the arm.
