How to Shrink a Cotton Polyester Blend Hoodie?

Published in Garment Shrinking 2 mins read

To shrink a cotton polyester blend hoodie, you can use methods involving high heat, primarily targeting the cotton fibers within the fabric.

Cotton is a natural fiber that tends to shrink when exposed to heat, especially when wet. Polyester, a synthetic fiber, is less prone to shrinking. Therefore, shrinking a blend focuses on maximizing the shrinkage of the cotton component.

Here are methods based on applying high heat:

Using Hot Water and High Heat Laundry Settings

One effective method involves using very hot water during washing and high heat during drying.

  • Submerge in Hot Water: Begin by submerging your sweatshirt in hot or even boiling water. This pre-soaking helps the cotton fibers absorb water and prepares them for shrinkage.
  • Hot Wash and Dry: After the hot water soak, launder your garment using a hot heat setting in both the washing machine and the dryer. The combination of hot water during washing and the high heat in the dryer will encourage the cotton fibers to contract.

Using an Iron on a Wet Hoodie

If the garment isn't shrunk enough after the washer and dryer method, applying direct heat with an iron can help.

  • Iron While Wet: While the sweatshirt is still wet, run a hot iron over the fabric. The direct, concentrated heat from the iron applied to the wet fibers can further induce shrinkage.

Using either of these methods or a combination may help you shrink your cotton polyester blend sweatshirt to your desired size.
