Why do kids become nonbinary?

Published in Gender identity 2 mins read

There isn't a single reason why a child identifies as nonbinary; rather, it's an intrinsic understanding of their own gender identity. Coming out as nonbinary often means they have been thinking about their gender for a while now and that they feel comfortable enough to not have to hide their true identity from you.

Instead of "becoming" nonbinary, it's more accurate to say children realize or discover they are nonbinary. Gender identity is a personal and internal sense of self.

Here's a breakdown of factors that contribute to a child identifying as nonbinary:

  • Internal Understanding: A child's sense of their own gender may not align with the sex they were assigned at birth. This internal feeling is a core part of their identity.
  • Self-Discovery: Children explore their identities, including gender, as they grow. As they learn more about different gender identities, they may find that "nonbinary" best describes how they feel.
  • Expression: Nonbinary identity allows for a broader range of gender expression, which may resonate with a child who doesn't fit neatly into traditional gender roles.
  • Comfort and Authenticity: Identifying as nonbinary allows a child to live more authentically and comfortably as themselves. It allows them to align their internal sense of self with their external presentation.
  • Safe Environment: As the reference suggests, a child needs to feel safe enough to share their identity with others. When they do, this is a precious gift that they have given you, so no matter how confused or shocked or dismayed you may feel, please keep it to yourself.
