How to Drain Gas From a Generator

Published in Generator Maintenance 5 mins read

Draining gas from a generator typically involves accessing the fuel line or carburetor drain and allowing the fuel to flow into a suitable container.

Keeping your generator in good working order requires proper maintenance, including occasionally draining old or excess fuel. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to safely drain gas from your generator's fuel tank.

Safety First: Before you begin, ensure the generator is completely off and cool. Work in a well-ventilated area, away from any open flames, sparks, or ignition sources. Have a certified fire extinguisher rated for flammable liquids (Class B) nearby. Wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and eye protection.

Step-by-Step Process to Drain Fuel

The most common method involves disconnecting the fuel line or using a drain screw on the carburetor.

  1. Gather Your Supplies:

    • Approved fuel container (plastic or metal, specifically designed for gasoline)
    • Wrench or pliers (to disconnect fuel line)
    • Screwdriver (for carburetor drain screw)
    • Funnel
    • Rag or absorbent pads
    • Optional: Fuel siphon pump
  2. Locate the Fuel Shut-Off Valve: Find the fuel shut-off valve on your generator. It's usually located between the fuel tank and the engine. Turn the valve to the "Off" or "Closed" position. This prevents fuel from continuously flowing from the tank while you work.

  3. Access the Fuel Line: Identify the fuel line running from the fuel tank to the carburetor.

  4. Place Collection Container: Position your approved fuel container directly below the point where you will disconnect the fuel line or access the drain. Use a funnel placed in the container opening to help direct the flow and prevent spills.

  5. Disconnect Fuel Line or Open Drain:

    • Method A (Fuel Line): Carefully disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor (or sometimes directly from the tank valve). Be prepared for fuel to start flowing immediately once the line is disconnected.
    • Method B (Carburetor Drain Screw): Many generators have a drain screw at the bottom of the carburetor float bowl. With the collection container in place, slowly loosen this screw. This will allow the fuel in the carburetor and often the tank to drain out through the carburetor drain port.
  6. Drain the Fuel: Allow the fuel to drain completely into your container.

    • Pro Tip: To help ensure all fuel is drained from the tank, slightly tilt the generator so that all the fuel flows towards one side and runs out of the disconnected fuel line or drain point.
  7. Drain Remaining Fuel from Lines/Carburetor: Once the main flow stops, there might be a small amount of fuel remaining in the fuel lines and the carburetor itself.

    • Turn On the Fuel Valve: Once most of the fuel has drained, switch the fuel valve back to the “On” position to drain any remaining fuel from the generator. This allows any fuel still in the line between the valve and the drain point to flow out. Let it drain for a few more moments.
  8. Secure Everything:

    • If you disconnected the fuel line, reconnect it securely, ensuring clamps are tight.
    • If you used the carburetor drain screw, tighten it gently but firmly (do not overtighten, as this can damage the screw or carburetor).
    • Return the fuel shut-off valve to the "Off" position for storage, or leave it "On" if you plan to refuel and use the generator soon.
  9. Clean Up: Wipe away any spilled fuel immediately using rags or absorbent pads. Dispose of fuel-soaked materials properly as they are a fire hazard.

Alternative: Using a Siphon Pump

A manual or electric fuel siphon pump can also be used to draw fuel directly from the fuel tank opening or through the fuel line. This can be cleaner than disconnecting lines but may not remove all fuel, especially from the carburetor.

What to Do with the Drained Fuel

  • Properly dispose of old or contaminated fuel at a local recycling center or hazardous waste facility. Do not pour it down drains or onto the ground.
  • Fresh, clean fuel can be stored in an approved container for later use, though it's best to use fuel stabilizer if storing for more than a short period.

Following these steps carefully will help you safely and effectively drain gas from your generator, preparing it for storage or fresh fuel.
