Can albinism be cured?

Published in Genetic Disorder 1 min read

Albinism is a genetic disorder, and there is currently no cure. Treatment focuses on addressing the symptoms and improving quality of life. This typically includes:

  • Proper eye care: People with albinism often have vision problems, including nystagmus (rapid eye movements) and photophobia (sensitivity to light). Glasses, contact lenses, and other vision aids can help improve vision.
  • Skin protection: Individuals with albinism are highly susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer due to a lack of melanin. Regular sunscreen use and protective clothing are essential.

While there's no cure for albinism itself, research is ongoing to explore potential treatments. These include gene therapy and stem cell research.
