Understanding Jacobs Syndrome (XYY Syndrome)
Jacobs syndrome, also known as 47,XYY syndrome, is a genetic condition primarily affecting males. This condition is characterized by the presence of an extra Y chromosome in each cell. Usually, males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY), but individuals with Jacobs syndrome have one X and two Y chromosomes (XYY). According to the reference, Jacobs syndrome is rare, occurring in about 1 out of 1000 male children.
This condition belongs to a group known as "sex chromosome trisomies," with Klinefelter syndrome being a more common type. Jacobs syndrome was initially discovered in the 1960s [1].
