Why Does My Baby Look Like My Ex?

Published in Genetics and Heredity 2 mins read

It's possible that the baby's resemblance to your ex could, in a very limited and currently unproven way in humans, be linked to prior exposure to their semen.

While genetics primarily determine a baby's features, one study suggests a possible (though unconfirmed in humans) mechanism:

  • Maternal Absorption: The study indicates that "molecules of the semen produced by the first partner might be absorbed by the mother's immature eggs." This suggests a potential, albeit speculative, influence from a previous partner. This possibility has been explored in other species, but more research is needed to know if this applies to humans. According to Dr. Angela Crean, author of the study, "We don't know yet whether this applies to other species."

Factors to Consider

Although, the study provides insight on this question it is important to note that:

  • Genetics Rule: The primary determinant of a baby's appearance is genetics from both biological parents.
  • Coincidental Resemblance: Similar features can occur simply by chance. Many features are common in the general population.
  • Confirmation Needed: The concept of maternal absorption affecting offspring traits requires further research and has not been conclusively proven in humans.
