A mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is one of a number of genetic conditions that cause sugar to be excreted in urine.
Most cases of mucopolysaccharidoses are diagnosed after a child is 12 months old.
In more detail:
-
Genetic Basis: MPS disorders arise from inherited genetic mutations.
-
Sugar Excretion: A key characteristic is the presence of excessive amounts of sugar in the urine. This is a result of the body's inability to properly break down certain complex sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), also known as mucopolysaccharides.
-
Diagnosis: Although some cases may be diagnosed earlier, many MPS conditions are not identified until a child is over one year old.
