What pigment causes albinism?

Published in Genetics 1 min read

Albinism is caused by a lack of melanin, the pigment responsible for coloring the skin, hair, and eyes. People with albinism either have very little melanin or none at all. This can lead to pale skin, hair, and eyes, and sometimes vision problems.

While melanin is the pigment directly affected in albinism, the condition itself is caused by genetic mutations that disrupt the production or distribution of melanin.
