Gold on Earth is primarily found due to hydrothermal processes that occur within the Earth's crust.

Hydrothermal Formation: The Main Source

The most significant process by which gold is deposited on Earth involves hydrothermal activity. This occurs when:

  • Hot Fluids Circulate: Hot, aqueous fluids, often originating from deep within the Earth or heated by magma, move through rocks. These fluids are rich in dissolved minerals, including gold.

  • Gold Dissolution: These fluids dissolve gold from surrounding rocks as they circulate.

  • Vein Formation: As the hydrothermal fluids move through cracks and fissures in the Earth's crust, changes in temperature, pressure, and chemical environment cause the dissolved gold to precipitate out of the solution. This leads to the formation of gold veins within the rock.

Other Sources and Locations:

While hydrothermal veins are the primary source, gold can also be found in other geological settings:

  • Placer Deposits: Over time, erosion can break down gold-bearing rocks, releasing gold particles. These particles are then transported by water and deposited in stream beds, riverbanks, and other locations where water flow slows down. These deposits are known as placer deposits.
