The Red Sea is currently growing.
This growth is due to a process called continental rifting, where the African and Arabian tectonic plates are pulling apart. This process is similar to how oceans are born and mature at mid-ocean ridges. The Red Sea is widening at an average rate of less than half an inch per year. This may seem insignificant, but over geological timescales, this widening will lead to a substantially larger sea.
