Continental crust is thicker than oceanic crust. Continental crust can be up to 25 miles thick, while oceanic crust is typically only a little more than four miles thick. This difference in thickness is due to the different densities of the two crust types. Continental crust is less dense than oceanic crust, allowing it to rise higher and create the continents we see today.
The thickness of the crust can also vary depending on the location. For example, the crust under the Himalayan Mountains is much thicker than the crust under the ocean floor.
