How Do I Resize a Brush in GIMP?

Published in GIMP Brush Tools 2 mins read

You can resize a brush in GIMP quickly using keyboard shortcuts and on-screen controls. Here's how:

Method 1: Keyboard Shortcuts (Most Efficient)

  • Increase Brush Size: Ctrl + Alt + Scroll Wheel Up
  • Decrease Brush Size: Ctrl + Alt + Scroll Wheel Down

This method provides incremental adjustments to the brush size, allowing for precise control. Keep in mind that you need to be over the image area or a toolbox dock for the scroll wheel to function as intended.

Method 2: Using the Brush Tool Options

  1. Select the Brush Tool: Click on the Brush Tool icon in the Toolbox (or press the 'P' key).
  2. Access Tool Options: Ensure the Tool Options dock is visible. If not, go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Tool Options.
  3. Adjust the Size Slider: In the Tool Options dock, you'll find a "Size" slider. Drag the slider to the left to decrease the brush size or to the right to increase it. You can also directly enter a numerical value in the size box.

Important Considerations:

  • Brush Type: The resizing method works for most brush types, including standard GIMP brushes and custom brushes.
  • Brush Hardness: Changing the brush size does not affect its hardness (feathering). You can adjust the hardness in the Tool Options dock as well, if the currently selected brush supports it.
  • Other Parameters: Besides size, the Tool Options dock allows you to adjust other brush parameters such as aspect ratio, angle, spacing, and force (depending on the selected tool and brush).
