How do you create a custom gradient in GIMP?

Published in GIMP Graphics Editing 2 mins read

To create a custom gradient in GIMP, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click anywhere in the gradient preview window (usually found in the Toolbox panel, often docked on the left side of the GIMP window). This will bring up a context menu.
  2. Select "Left Endpoint's Color" from the context menu. This opens the color selection dialog.
  3. Choose your desired color for the left endpoint of the gradient and click "OK."
  4. Right-click again in the gradient preview window.
  5. Select "Right Endpoint's Color" from the context menu. This opens the color selection dialog again.
  6. Choose your desired color for the right endpoint of the gradient and click "OK."

You now have a simple two-color custom gradient. To create more complex gradients, you can add more color stops along the gradient. This is generally done using the Gradient Editor dialog, which is accessed by double-clicking on the gradient preview in the Toolbox, or by going to Windows -> Dockable Dialogs -> Gradients. In the Gradient Editor, you can add, move, and modify color stops, including adjusting blending options and color segments to create highly customized gradients.
