How do I make a rectangle shape in GIMP?

Published in GIMP Graphics 2 mins read

You can create a rectangle in GIMP using the Rectangle Select Tool and then filling the selection. Here's how:

  1. Select the Rectangle Select Tool: Find the Rectangle Select Tool in the Toolbox. It usually looks like a rectangle with a dotted outline.

  2. Create the Selection: Click and drag on your image to create a rectangular selection. The size and proportions of the rectangle are determined by how you drag.

  3. Fill the Selection:

    • Choose a color: Select the foreground or background color you want to use for your rectangle.
    • Use the Bucket Fill Tool: Select the Bucket Fill Tool from the Toolbox. Make sure the "Fill whole selection" option is checked.
    • Click inside the selection: Click anywhere inside the rectangular selection to fill it with the chosen color.
  4. Optional: Adjust the Selection Before Filling:

    • To make a perfect square: While dragging the Rectangle Select Tool, hold down the Shift key. This will constrain the selection to a square.
    • To move the selection: After creating the initial selection (but before filling), you can move it by hovering near the edge of the selection until the cursor changes to a move cursor, then click and drag to reposition.
    • To resize the selection: Hover near the edges or corners of the selection until the cursor changes to a resize cursor, then click and drag to adjust the size.
  5. Deselect: Once you're happy with the rectangle, go to Select > None (or press Ctrl+Shift+A or Cmd+Shift+A on Mac) to remove the selection outline.
