How to Rotate a Feature in ArcPro

Published in GIS Feature Editing 3 mins read

Rotating features is a fundamental editing operation in ArcGIS Pro, allowing you to adjust the orientation of selected elements on your map. This process is straightforward and uses a dedicated tool found on the editing ribbon.

To rotate one or more features in ArcPro, you primarily use the Rotate tool, accessible from the Edit tab.

Here are the steps to rotate a feature based on the standard workflow:

Steps to Rotate a Feature in ArcPro

The process involves selecting the features you want to rotate and then using the interactive tool.

  1. Open Your Map and Add Layers:

    • Begin by opening the map that contains the features you need to edit.
    • Ensure the layer containing the features is added to the map and is editable.
  2. Access the Edit Tab:

    • Click on the Edit tab located on the ribbon interface at the top of the ArcPro window. This tab contains all the tools necessary for creating and modifying geographic features.
  3. Activate the Rotate Tool:

    • Within the Edit tab, navigate to the Tools group.
    • Click on the Rotate tool icon. Activating this tool prepares the software for interactive rotation.
  4. Select Features:

    • Use the Rotate tool cursor to select the features you wish to rotate. You can click individual features or drag a box around multiple features.
  5. Perform the Rotation:

    • Once features are selected, a pivot point (or auxiliary anchor) will appear. By default, this is often at the centroid of the selection.
    • Click and drag the features around the pivot point to rotate them to the desired angle.
    • Optionally: You can move the selection and auxiliary anchors to useful locations. Use these anchors to snap to other features, allowing for precise alignment during rotation.

After rotating, you can commit your changes by saving the edits on the Edit tab.
