How to Carry Glass Panels?

Published in Glass Handling 2 mins read

Glass panels should always be carried upright on their edge, similar to how you would carry drywall or plywood, because glass is weak and can't support its own weight when laid flat.

Here's a breakdown of the recommended method:

  • Upright Position: The key to safely carrying glass is to always keep it vertical. This distributes the weight along the edge, which is the strongest part of the glass.

  • Hand Placement:

    • Bottom Hand: Use a suction cup handle on your bottom hand to provide a secure grip and support the weight.
    • Top Hand: Use your top hand without a suction cup. This hand is primarily for guiding and balancing the glass.
  • Technique:

    1. Position the glass panel upright.
    2. Attach the suction cup to the glass near the bottom edge.
    3. Grip the suction cup handle firmly with your lower hand.
    4. Place your upper hand on the glass near the top edge, using it to maintain balance and control.
    5. Lift with your legs, keeping your back straight.
    6. Walk slowly and deliberately, avoiding sudden movements.
  • Important Considerations:

    • Thickness and Size: For larger or thicker panels, consider using two people, each with a suction cup handle.
    • Gloves: Wear gloves for better grip and protection against sharp edges.
    • Clear Path: Ensure a clear and unobstructed path before lifting the glass.
    • Placement: Carefully set the glass down on a protected surface (e.g., padded blocks or cardboard) to prevent damage.
    • Suction Cup Quality: Use high-quality suction cups specifically designed for glass handling. Check them for damage before each use.
    • Clean Surface: Ensure the glass surface is clean and dry where the suction cup will be placed to ensure a strong hold.
  • Why Not Flat? Laying glass flat puts all the stress on its surface, making it highly susceptible to cracking or breaking.
