How to Fit Glasses at Home

Published in Glasses Adjustment 3 mins read

Fitting glasses at home involves minor adjustments to ensure a comfortable and secure fit. While a professional optician is best for significant repairs, many simple adjustments can be made independently.

Adjusting Glasses Arms

Glasses arms (temples) can be adjusted to achieve a tighter or looser fit. To tighten loose glasses arms:

  • Hold your glasses: Hold the glasses face up, lenses facing you. Place the four fingers of one hand under the temple, with your index finger resting at the natural temple bend for support.
  • Gently bend: Gently bend the temple end up or down in relation to your index finger. Bending the temple end down will tighten the glasses. Experiment with small adjustments and test the fit frequently. Do not forcefully bend the arms as this can break the frames.

For plastic frames, immersing them in warm water for 30-60 seconds before adjusting can make the frames more pliable and easier to reshape.

Adjusting Nose Pads and Bridge

Metal frames can be tightened by gently pinching the sides of the bridge or nose pads for a more secure fit. For plastic frames with adjustable nose pads, carefully loosen or tighten the screws to change the fit.

Reshaping Plastic Frames

Plastic frames can be reshaped using gentle heat and pressure. Warming the frames with a hairdryer (on a low setting) or immersing them in warm water can make them more malleable. Then, carefully reshape the frames by applying gentle pressure. Be extremely cautious not to apply excessive heat or pressure which can damage the frames.

When to Seek Professional Help

For significant frame damage or if you are uncomfortable making adjustments yourself, it is advisable to visit an optician or eyeglass store. They have the proper tools and expertise to ensure your glasses are properly fitted and repaired.

Important Considerations:

  • Frame Material: Adjusting techniques vary based on the frame material (metal, plastic, acetate).
  • Gentle Adjustments: Always make small, incremental adjustments and check the fit frequently to prevent damage to the frames.
  • Professional Help: For significant repairs or if you are unsure about how to proceed, it is always best to seek professional help.
