How can I edit my Gmail address?

Published in Gmail Basics 2 mins read

Unfortunately, you cannot directly edit or change your existing Gmail address. Once you create a Gmail address, it's permanently associated with your Google account.

Instead of editing, here are your alternative options:

  • Create a New Gmail Account: This is the most straightforward solution. You can create a new Google account with your desired Gmail address.

  • Use Email Aliases (if available through Google Workspace): If you are using Google Workspace (formerly G Suite), your administrator might have enabled email aliases. An alias allows you to receive email at different addresses, all within the same inbox. Check with your Google Workspace administrator to see if this option is available.

  • Change Your Display Name: While this doesn't change your actual email address, you can change the name that recipients see when you send emails.

    1. Go to your Google Account.
    2. On the left navigation panel, click "Personal info."
    3. Under "Basic info," click "Name" then "Edit."
    4. Enter your preferred name and click "Save."
  • Use "Send mail as" to Send From a Different Address: You can configure Gmail to send emails as if they are coming from another email address you own (e.g., a domain-specific email address). This doesn't change your Gmail address, but lets you send emails from other addresses using your Gmail interface.

    1. In Gmail, click the Settings cog in the top right, then "See all settings."
    2. Click the "Accounts and Import" or "Accounts" tab.
    3. Under "Send mail as," click "Add another email address."
    4. Follow the instructions to verify and add the other email address.

In summary, you can't edit your Gmail address, but the options above provide workarounds to achieve similar results, either by creating a new address, changing what recipients see, or sending from alternative addresses.
