How Do I Clear My Search Bar History in Gmail?

Published in Gmail Privacy 2 mins read

You can clear your Gmail search history through your Google Account's My Activity page by deleting your Google Workspace search history in batches. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Steps to Clear Your Gmail Search History:

  1. Go to Google's My Activity Page: Navigate to the Google My Activity page. You may be prompted to sign in to your Google account.

  2. Access "Other Activity": In the left-hand menu (or the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner on mobile), look for and click on "Other Google Activity." If you don't see it directly, you might need to click on "Controls" or "Activity controls" first and then navigate to "Other Google Activity".

  3. Find Google Workspace Search History: Scroll down the "Other Google Activity" page until you find "Google Workspace search history". It might be listed under a slightly different name, but look for anything related to search history within Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, etc.).

  4. Delete Your Gmail Search History:

    • Click the "Delete" button next to "Google Workspace search history".
    • You'll be presented with options to delete:
      • All time: This deletes all your Gmail search history.
      • Last hour: Deletes only the searches made in the last hour.
      • Last day: Deletes searches made in the last 24 hours.
      • Custom range: Allows you to specify a date range for deletion.
    • Choose the desired option and confirm the deletion.

Important Considerations:

  • Deleting your search history on My Activity will affect all Google Workspace services connected to that account, including Gmail and Google Drive search histories.
  • There is currently no way to selectively delete individual searches directly within Gmail's search bar. You must delete in batches via My Activity.

By following these steps, you can successfully clear your Gmail search history and maintain your privacy.
