How do goat horns grow?

Published in Goat Biology 1 min read

Goat horns grow from the skull and exhibit significant growth early in life, slowing considerably after the first few years.

Goat horn growth is characterized by rapid development in early life, followed by a deceleration after about 5 years of age. More specifically, horn growth is most significant during the first 3 years, with goats reaching approximately 93% of their full horn size by this point. The growth pattern is considered quadratic during the initial 5 years. After this period, horn growth is negligible. Male goats tend to have faster horn growth than female goats, particularly during the first 1.5 years of life.
