How do I remove a website from my Google Analytics account?

Published in Google Analytics 3 mins read

Removing a website (more accurately, a property representing your website) from your Google Analytics account is done by moving the property to the Trash Can within your Google Analytics settings. You must have Editor permissions or higher at the property level to do this.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Access Admin Settings: In your Google Analytics account, navigate to the Admin section (usually located at the bottom left of the screen).

  2. Select the Property: Under the Property column, if the website you want to remove isn't already selected, use the property selector to choose the correct Analytics property. The property represents the website you wish to remove data tracking for.

  3. Open Property Settings: Under the Property column, click on "Property settings". In some versions, this might be labeled "Property details".

  4. Move to Trash Can: In the Property Settings, scroll to the end of the settings page, you will find a button that says "Move to Trash Can". Click on that button.

  5. Confirmation: You'll be prompted to confirm your decision. Google Analytics will also inform you about the consequences of this action, such as when the data will be permanently deleted (typically 35 days). Read this information carefully and, if you're sure, confirm that you want to move the property to the Trash Can.

Important Considerations:

  • Permissions Required: You need Editor access or higher at the property level to move a property to the trash can. If you don't have the necessary permissions, you'll need to contact an administrator of the Google Analytics account to assist you.

  • Data Deletion: Moving a property to the Trash Can doesn't immediately delete the data. It remains in the Trash Can for 35 days. After this period, it's permanently deleted.

  • Irreversible Action (Eventually): Once the data is permanently deleted (after 35 days in the Trash Can), it cannot be recovered. Make sure you have backed up any necessary reports or data before deleting a property.

  • Account vs. Property: Remember, you are removing a property (representing your website), not your entire Google Analytics account.

By following these steps, you can successfully remove a website from your Google Analytics account. Just remember to consider the consequences and ensure you have the appropriate permissions before proceeding.
