How do I move classwork in Google Classroom?

Published in Google Classroom Management 3 mins read

Moving classwork in Google Classroom, such as topics, assignments, materials, and questions, is done directly on the Classwork page using drag-and-drop functionality or a menu option.

You can easily rearrange the order of items displayed to your students. This is particularly useful for organizing content logically, perhaps placing the most recent or current unit at the top.

Moving Topics

Topics serve as headings or organizational units on your Classwork page. Rearranging them changes the order in which students see entire sections of work.

  • Direct Drag-and-Drop: The most common method is to click and hold the topic you want to move.
  • Repositioning: While holding, drag the topic up or down the list to its desired location.
  • Release: Release the mouse button, and the topic will snap into place.

As demonstrated in the reference, to move a topic like "digital storytelling" higher, you "click on digital storytelling. And it is now higher." This simple action allows you to quickly reorder your main content categories.

Alternatively, you can often use a menu next to the topic name (three vertical dots). Clicking this menu usually provides options like "Move up" or "Move down" for precise positioning.

Moving Assignments and Other Classwork Items

Assignments, materials, and questions are typically nested under topics. You can also move these individual items.

  • Within a Topic: You can drag and drop items within the same topic to reorder them.
  • Between Topics: You can also drag an item from one topic and drop it into another existing topic. This is a handy way to reorganize content if it fits better elsewhere.
  • To the Top (No Topic): You can drag items out from under any topic to place them at the top of the Classwork page in the "No topic" section, or drag items from the "No topic" section into a specific topic.

Steps to Move an Item:

  1. Go to the Classwork page in your Google Classroom.
  2. Find the assignment, material, or question you want to move.
  3. Click and hold the item's title or the area around it.
  4. Drag the item to its new desired location (either within the same topic, into a different topic, or to the top).
  5. Release the mouse button.

This flexibility allows you to curate the flow of information and activities for your students effectively.
