Removing a class in Google Classroom is a two-step process that involves first archiving the class and then deleting it permanently from your archived classes list.
To remove a class, you must be the class owner. Archiving a class removes it from your active classes view but preserves all class materials and student work. Deleting the class is a permanent action.
Steps to Archive and Delete a Google Classroom Class
Follow these steps to remove a class:
Step 1: Archive the Class
Before you can delete a class, you must archive it. Archiving hides the class from your main classes list but keeps all data associated with it.
- Go to classroom.google.com.
- On the Classes page, find the class you want to remove.
- Click the three vertical dots (⋮) on the class card.
- Select "Archive".
- Confirm your action by clicking "Archive" again in the pop-up window.
The class will now be moved to your archived classes list.
Step 2: Delete the Class from Archived
Once a class is archived, you can permanently delete it. Deleting a class is irreversible and permanently removes the class, its posts, assignments, grades, and student data.
- Open the main menu in Google Classroom (usually three horizontal lines, ☰, in the top left corner).
- Scroll down to archived classes.
- Click on "Archived classes" in the menu.
- Find the archived class you wish to delete.
- Click on the three dots right here again (⋮) on the archived class card.
- Select "Delete".
- Confirm your action by clicking "Delete" again in the pop-up window.
The class is now permanently removed from Google Classroom.
It's important to archive a class at the end of a term or year to keep your active classes list tidy. Only delete a class if you are absolutely certain you no longer need any of its content or student data.
