How do you color code an assignment in Google Classroom?

Published in Google Classroom Tips 2 mins read

While Google Classroom doesn't have a direct "color coding" feature for assignments, you can effectively achieve a similar result using emojis in the assignment titles.

Here's how to color code assignments using emojis:

  1. Edit or Create an Assignment: When creating a new assignment or editing an existing one, focus on the "Title" field.

  2. Add Emojis: Incorporate a relevant emoji at the beginning of the assignment title. Choose emojis that represent colors or categories (e.g., a red heart for urgent assignments, a green checkmark for completed tasks, or a blue book for reading assignments).

  3. Example: Instead of just "Math Homework," title the assignment "❤️ Math Homework" (using a red heart emoji).

  4. Consistency is Key: Establish a system where specific emojis consistently represent specific categories or priorities. This will allow students (and you) to quickly identify and sort assignments visually. For example:

    • 🟥 = Urgent/Important
    • 🟦 = Reading Material
    • 🟩 = Completed
  5. Assign: Assign the assignment. The emoji will now appear in the assignment stream and in the Classwork tab, allowing for a visual "color-coded" organization.

By utilizing emojis in this manner, you can create a visually organized system that enhances the user experience in Google Classroom without relying on a dedicated color-coding feature.
