How do I remove a Google Photos backup?

Published in Google Photos Backup 2 mins read

To remove a Google Photos backup, you'll need to disable the backup feature and then delete the backed-up photos and videos. Here's how you can do it:

Steps to Remove Google Photos Backup

  1. Turn off Backup in the Google Photos App:

    • On your Android device, open the Google Photos app.
    • Navigate to the settings (this may vary slightly depending on your version of the app).
    • Find the "Backup & sync" option and turn it off. This will prevent future photos from being backed up.
  2. Access Google Photos on a Computer or Mobile Browser:

    • Open a web browser on your computer or mobile device.
    • Go to photos.google.com/login and sign in with your Google account.
  3. Delete Backed Up Photos and Videos:

    • Once logged in, you can browse through your backed-up photos and videos.
    • Select the items you want to remove.
    • Delete the selected photos and videos. Keep in mind that deleting these items will remove them from your Google Photos account and any synced devices.

Important Considerations:

  • Turning off backup only stops future uploads. It does not remove existing backed-up content.
  • Deleting photos from Google Photos does not delete them from your device if they weren't backed up from there.
  • Be cautious when deleting, as this action is usually irreversible. Check the trash or recycle bin if you accidentally delete something.
