How do I set up Google Photo Backup?

Published in Google Photos 2 mins read

Setting up Google Photos backup is straightforward; here's how you can do it on your Android device:

  1. Open the Google Photos App: Locate and open the Google Photos app on your Android phone or tablet.

  2. Sign In: Ensure you're signed in to your Google Account.

  3. Access Settings: At the top right, tap your Profile picture or Initial. This will open a menu.

  4. Navigate to Backup Settings: Tap "Photos settings" and then tap "Backup".

  5. Enable Backup: If backup is off, toggle the "Backup" switch to the "on" position. Review and adjust the following settings as needed:

    • Backup Quality: Choose between "Original Quality" (stores photos and videos as they are taken, using your Google Account storage) or "Storage saver" (compresses photos and videos to save storage space). Google Photos offers 15GB of free storage shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.

    • Cellular Data Usage: Configure how Google Photos uses cellular data for backup. You can choose to back up over cellular data (which might incur charges from your mobile carrier) or only back up when connected to Wi-Fi.

    • Back up device folders: Tap "Back up device folders" to select specific folders on your device (e.g., WhatsApp Images, Screenshots) that you want to automatically back up to Google Photos. Ensure the toggle is switched to the "on" position for each folder you wish to back up.

That's it! Google Photos will now automatically back up your photos and videos based on your chosen settings. Changes to your backup settings may take a few moments to apply.
