How to Generate an App Password in Google?

Published in Google Security 2 mins read

To generate an app password in Google, you need to access your account security settings and navigate to the App passwords section under 2-Step Verification.

App passwords are required for applications that don't support 2-Step Verification (2SV) when you have 2SV enabled on your Google Account. This allows you to use these apps securely with your Google account.

Here are the steps to generate an app password:

Steps to Generate a Google App Password

Follow these instructions carefully to create an app password for your Google Account:

  1. Access Your Account: Go to the MyAccount page. This is the central hub for managing your Google Account settings.
  2. Navigate to Security: Click on the Security option from the left-hand menu. This section contains all settings related to your account's safety and sign-in methods.
  3. Access 2-Step Verification: Locate the "Signing in to Google" section and click on 2-Step Verification. Note: You must have 2-Step Verification enabled on your account to use app passwords.
  4. Log In (If Prompted): You may be asked to log in again with your Google Workspace username and password to confirm your identity.
  5. Find App Passwords: Scroll down to the bottom of the 2-Step Verification page until you find the App passwords section.
  6. Open App Passwords Settings: Click on the arrow pointing to the right next to "App passwords".

On the next screen, you will typically select the app and device you want to generate the password for (e.g., Mail on a Windows Computer) and then click "Generate". Google will then provide you with a unique password that you can use in that specific application instead of your regular Google account password.

Remember that this generated password is used only for the specific app you selected and does not replace your main Google Account password.
