How Do You Highlight a Google Sheet?

Published in Google Sheets Formatting 2 mins read

To highlight cells in a Google Sheet, you simply select the cells and apply a fill color.

Step-by-Step Guide to Highlighting Cells

Highlighting specific cells or ranges in Google Sheets is a common way to draw attention to important data, organize information, or simply make your sheet visually appealing. Follow these easy steps:

  1. Select the Cells: Begin by identifying the cells you wish to highlight. You can select a single cell by clicking it, a range of cells by clicking and dragging your cursor over them, or multiple non-contiguous cells by holding down the Ctrl (or Cmd on Mac) key while clicking individual cells or ranges.

    • Tip: To select an entire row, click the row number on the left. To select an entire column, click the column letter at the top. To select the entire sheet, click the empty box in the top-left corner where the row numbers and column letters meet.
  2. Access the Fill Color Tool: Locate the toolbar at the top of your Google Sheet interface. Find the "Fill color" icon, which looks like a paint bucket tipping over. Click on this icon.

  3. Choose Your Color: A color palette will appear. Browse through the available colors. Click on your preferred color from this palette. The selected color will be immediately applied as the background fill for the cells you selected in step 1.

  • Enhancement: You can also access custom colors or use the 'More colors' option at the bottom of the palette for a wider selection or to enter a specific HEX code.
