How do you make gouache more opaque?

Published in Gouache Painting 2 mins read

To make gouache more opaque, use more pigment in your paint mixture and avoid over-diluting it with water.

Many artists, especially those transitioning from watercolor, tend to add too much water to their gouache, resulting in a more transparent wash. Gouache, by its nature, is designed to be opaque. Here's how to achieve that:

  • Increase Pigment Concentration: Use a higher ratio of paint to water. Start with a small amount of water and gradually add more only if needed for brushwork.
  • Apply Multiple Layers: If you've already applied a thin layer, let it dry completely and then apply another layer of gouache. Each layer will contribute to building up opacity. This is a very common method.
  • Use Opaque Colors: Some colors are naturally more transparent than others. Earth tones and colors containing white pigment tend to be more opaque. Be mindful of the colors you choose.
  • Consider Titanium White: Adding a small amount of titanium white to your mixture can significantly increase its opacity. Be careful not to add too much, as it can lighten the color considerably.
  • Work on a Non-Absorbent Surface: If your paper is too absorbent, it can soak up the pigment, leaving a less opaque layer. Consider priming your surface or using a smoother paper.
  • Avoid Excessive Mixing: Overmixing can incorporate too much air into your paint, making it appear chalky and less opaque.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your gouache paintings have the desired opacity and vibrancy.
