How do I use virtual Super Resolution?

Published in Graphics Settings 2 mins read

Virtual Super Resolution (VSR) lets you experience higher image quality in games by rendering them at a resolution higher than your monitor's native resolution and then downscaling them. Here's how to use it:

  1. Enable VSR in your graphics card's control panel:

    • AMD: Open AMD Radeon Software. Navigate to the "Gaming" tab, then "Global Graphics." Look for an option called "Virtual Super Resolution" or similar. Enable it.
  2. Launch your desired game: Start the game you want to use VSR with.

  3. Access the in-game graphics or video settings: Navigate to the game's options menu. This is usually found under "Settings," "Options," "Graphics," or "Video."

  4. Find the resolution settings: Look for a setting that allows you to change the game's resolution. It might be labeled as "Resolution," "Display Resolution," or similar.

  5. Select a VSR mode: In the resolution list, you should see options higher than your monitor's native resolution. These are the VSR modes. For example, if you have a 1080p (1920x1080) monitor, you might see options like 1440p (2560x1440) or 4K (3840x2160).

  6. Apply or Save Changes: Select the VSR resolution you desire and click "Apply," "Save," or "OK" to save the settings.

  7. Restart the game (if prompted): Some games require a restart for the resolution change to take effect.

Important Considerations:

  • Performance: VSR puts a greater strain on your graphics card. Choose a VSR resolution that your GPU can handle to maintain a playable frame rate. Start with a slightly higher resolution than your native one and gradually increase it until you find a balance between image quality and performance.

  • Monitor Compatibility: VSR works by downscaling the higher resolution image. Your monitor needs to be able to display the downscaled image correctly. Most modern monitors should work fine, but very old monitors might have issues.

  • AMD Only: Virtual Super Resolution is an AMD technology. NVIDIA offers a similar feature called Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR). The setup process for DSR is analogous: enable it in the NVIDIA Control Panel and then select the higher resolution in-game.
