Who is Zeus's enemy?

Published in Greek Mythology 1 min read

Zeus's primary enemy is Typhon.

Typhon, a monstrous giant, attempted to overthrow Zeus and seize control of the cosmos. This led to a massive and destructive battle where Zeus ultimately prevailed, using his powerful thunderbolts to defeat Typhon.

While other figures opposed Zeus at various times, such as:

  • The Titans: Zeus warred with the Titans in the Titanomachy to establish the Olympian gods' rule.
  • Giants (Gigantes): The Giants also waged war against the Olympian gods in the Gigantomachy, though this was a separate conflict from Typhon's rebellion.
  • Individual Gods/Mortals: At times, individual gods like Hera (his wife) or mortals challenged Zeus's authority.

Typhon represents the most significant and direct existential threat to Zeus's rule and power, making him Zeus's ultimate enemy. After his defeat, Typhon was imprisoned, most often described as being cast into Tartarus or buried under Mount Etna.
