How to Support Tomato Plants in a Greenhouse?

Published in Greenhouse Gardening 3 mins read

Supporting tomato plants in a greenhouse is crucial for healthy growth and abundant yields. Here's how you can effectively support your tomato plants:

1. Canes or Stakes

This is the most straightforward method.

  • How to Install: If your greenhouse has adequate soil depth, insert a cane (bamboo or plastic) about 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) away from the tomato plant stem to avoid damaging the roots.
  • Securing the Plant: As the tomato plant grows, gently tie the stem to the cane using soft twine or tomato clips. Avoid tying too tightly, which can restrict growth.
  • Enhanced Support: For larger or indeterminate (vining) tomato varieties, consider attaching a wire tautly across the greenhouse roof. Then, attach the canes to this wire for added stability.

2. String Trellising

A popular method, especially for greenhouses, that involves vertical strings.

  • Installation: Secure strong twine or specialized tomato twine to the greenhouse frame or a horizontal wire above each plant. The twine should hang down to the base of the plant.
  • Training the Plant: As the plant grows, twist the main stem gently around the twine, encouraging it to grow upwards.
  • Benefits: This method promotes good airflow and reduces the risk of disease.

3. Tomato Cages

Commercially available or homemade cages offer all-around support.

  • Installation: Place the cage around the young tomato plant early in the season, pushing it firmly into the soil.
  • Maintenance: As the plant grows, the branches will naturally rest on the cage wires. Pruning may be necessary to maintain airflow and prevent overcrowding.
  • Best For: Bush or determinate tomato varieties that don't grow as tall as vining types.

4. Other Considerations

  • Pruning: Regular pruning of suckers (the shoots that grow between the main stem and branches) is essential for directing the plant's energy into fruit production and for maintaining good airflow, regardless of the support method chosen.
  • Weight: Be mindful of the weight of the mature tomato plants, especially when laden with fruit. Ensure your chosen support method is strong enough to handle the load.

By using one of these methods, you can provide the necessary support for your tomato plants, leading to healthier plants and a bountiful harvest.
