How to Grow Green Onions from Bulbs

Published in Growing Green Onions 2 mins read

Growing green onions from their root ends is easy! Simply follow these steps to enjoy a continuous supply of fresh green onions.

Getting Started: Propagating from the Root End

  1. Save the root ends: After using green onions, don't throw away the root end (the white bulbous part). Make sure a good inch or two of the root remains attached to the green shoots.

  2. Place in water: Place the root ends in a cup or jar filled with filtered water. Ensure that the roots are submerged but the green tops are above the waterline. This allows the roots to absorb water and begin the regrowth process.

  3. Observe growth: Within a few days, you'll notice new growth emerging from the root end. You should observe new green shoots appearing from the root end.

  4. Maintain water quality: Regularly change the water (every 1-2 days) to prevent bacteria growth and to maintain a fresh, clean environment for your growing green onions.

Transitioning to Soil: For Longer-Term Growth

While growing in water is a great way to get a quick start, transitioning to soil ensures longer-term growth and a more robust plant.

  1. Planting in soil: Once the roots have developed and the green shoots are about an inch or two tall, plant the root ends in soil. Choose a pot with good drainage. Plant them approximately ½ inch deep, and make sure the soil is moist but not waterlogged.

  2. Ongoing care: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Regular watering and bright, indirect sunlight will help your green onions thrive. Harvest your onions by snipping the green shoots; new growth will continuously emerge from the roots.

By following these simple steps, you can easily regrow green onions from the root ends, saving money and enjoying fresh herbs at your fingertips.
