How to Strum with Long Nails?

Published in Guitar Techniques 2 mins read

If your nails are longer than a guitar pick, you can strum by shaping them to mimic a pick.

Here's how to adapt your strumming technique for long nails:

Filing Technique

  • Shape your nails: Use a nail file to carefully file your nails into a pointed shape, focusing on the middle of the nail. Imagine you're creating a mini guitar pick.
  • Even Slopes: Ensure the slopes on either side of the point are symmetrical. This promotes consistent tone and prevents snagging on the strings.
  • Which Nails to File? You can file all the nails on your strumming hand or just your pointer finger and thumb, depending on your preference and strumming style. Experiment to find what works best for you.

Strumming Technique

  • Angle of Attack: Instead of hitting the strings straight on, try angling your hand slightly. This allows the nail to glide across the strings more smoothly and prevents a harsh, clicky sound.
  • Light Touch: Use a lighter touch than you might with a pick. Let the nail do the work, and avoid pressing down too hard on the strings. This will help prevent nail breakage and produce a cleaner sound.
  • Experiment with Different Nails: Try using different nails on your hand for upstrokes and downstrokes. Some players find that using the thumb nail for downstrokes and the index finger nail for upstrokes gives them the best control and tone.
  • Practice Regularly: Like any new technique, strumming with long nails requires practice. Start slowly and gradually increase your speed as you become more comfortable.

By filing your nails correctly and adjusting your strumming technique, you can effectively use your long nails to strum a guitar.
