What is a Gynaecology Scan?

Published in Gynaecological Imaging 2 mins read

A gynaecology scan, often a gynaecological ultrasound, is a medical imaging technique primarily used to examine the female pelvic organs. According to Danielle Nixon (Radiology Manager) and Lisa Serevena (Quality Lead Diagnostic Radiology), it's often used to examine conditions affecting the organs in a woman's pelvis - the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries.

Purpose of a Gynaecology Scan

The primary purpose of a gynaecology scan is to visualize and assess the health and condition of the female reproductive organs. This includes:

  • Uterus: Evaluating its size, shape, and looking for abnormalities like fibroids, polyps, or cancer.
  • Fallopian Tubes: Assessing for blockages, fluid accumulation (hydrosalpinx), or ectopic pregnancies.
  • Ovaries: Checking for cysts, tumors, or signs of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Types of Gynaecology Scans

There are typically two main types of gynaecology ultrasound scans:

  1. Transabdominal Ultrasound: This involves placing the transducer on the abdomen. A full bladder is usually required to provide a better view of the pelvic organs.

  2. Transvaginal Ultrasound: A small transducer is inserted into the vagina to obtain a clearer, more detailed image of the uterus and ovaries. This method doesn't require a full bladder.

Common Conditions Evaluated

A gynaecology scan can help diagnose various conditions, including:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Infertility issues
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Suspected cancers of the reproductive organs

Benefits of Gynaecology Scans

  • Non-invasive (for transabdominal): Generally painless and doesn't involve radiation.
  • Detailed Imaging: Provides clear images of the pelvic organs.
  • Early Detection: Helps in the early detection of various gynecological conditions.

Example Scenario

Imagine a woman experiencing persistent pelvic pain and irregular menstrual cycles. Her doctor might order a gynaecology scan to investigate potential causes such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, or endometriosis. The scan provides valuable information that aids in accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning.
