When Boys Have Breasts?

Published in Gynecomastia 2 mins read

Boys can develop breasts, a condition called gynecomastia. This typically occurs during puberty due to hormonal changes. However, gynecomastia can also be caused by other factors.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the development of prominent breast tissue in males. It's characterized by an increase in breast gland tissue, causing the breasts to become larger than usual. The nipples or breasts might also feel swollen or sore. [Gynecomastia (guy-nuh-koh-MAS-tee-uh)] is a common occurrence affecting both boys and men.

Causes of Gynecomastia in Boys:

  • Puberty: Hormonal fluctuations during puberty are the most common cause. This is often temporary and resolves on its own within one to two years. Small, firm breast buds can develop under the nipples and may be tender. About half of males aged 12 to 16 experience this. (Nemours KidsHealth, Boston Children's Hospital, Banner Health)

  • Hormonal Imbalance: An imbalance between estrogen and testosterone can lead to gynecomastia. This can be caused by various underlying conditions. (Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic)

  • Medications: Certain medications can cause hormonal imbalances resulting in gynecomastia as a side effect.

  • Substance Use: Exposure to estrogens, androgens (often misused for bodybuilding), and marijuana can also contribute to the development of gynecomastia.

When to Seek Medical Attention:

While often temporary, persistent or unusually large breast development warrants a visit to a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
