How many layers are in hair?

Published in Hair Anatomy 1 min read

Hair has three layers: the cuticle, cortex, and medulla.

Here's a breakdown of each layer:

  • Cuticle: This is the outermost layer of the hair shaft. It's made up of overlapping cells, similar to scales on a fish or shingles on a roof. According to the reference, these cells are arranged in a shingle or scale-like pattern.

  • Cortex: The cortex is the middle layer and the thickest part of the hair shaft. It contains the pigment that gives hair its color.

  • Medulla: The medulla is the innermost layer of the hair shaft. It's not always present, especially in fine or very blonde hair.

Hair Layer Description
Cuticle Outermost layer, overlapping cells like scales. Protects the inner layers.
Cortex Middle and thickest layer, contains pigment (melanin) for hair color.
Medulla Innermost layer, not always present, especially in fine hair.
