What is the hair matrix?

Published in Hair Biology 1 min read

The hair matrix is the area where hair shaft formation happens through cell proliferation.

Understanding the Hair Matrix

The hair matrix is a crucial component of the hair follicle responsible for hair growth and pigmentation. Located at the base of the hair follicle, it's a hub of cellular activity.

Key Functions of the Hair Matrix:

  • Cell Proliferation: The matrix contains matrix keratinocytes that rapidly divide and differentiate. According to the reference, this proliferation forms the hair shaft.
  • Hair Shaft Formation: These dividing cells push upwards, keratinize, and form the different layers of the hair shaft.
  • Pigmentation: Melanocytes residing within the matrix inject melanin into the keratinocytes, providing the hair shaft with its color.

Hair Shaft Structure:

The hair shaft formed by the matrix consists of:

  • Medulla: The inner core of the hair.
  • Cortex: The bulk of the hair surrounding the medulla.
