How to Tie Box Braid Ends?

Published in Hair Braiding Techniques 3 mins read

Tying box braid ends securely is a simple yet essential step to keep your braids neat, prevent unraveling, and maintain your protective style. One effective and straightforward method involves creating a secure knot at the desired length of the braid.

Tying Box Braid Ends with a Knot

This method, often used to finish off box braids, ensures the ends are sealed without requiring heat or additional products for the basic tie. It focuses on using the hair itself to create a durable closure.

Step-by-Step Knotting Method

Follow these precise steps to secure your box braid ends using a knot:

  1. Braid to Desired Length: Continue braiding your box braid down until you reach the exact point where you intend to tie it off. This is the length at which the braid will end and the knot will begin.
  2. Isolate a Small Piece: From the middle section of the braid at your chosen tying point, carefully take out a small, thin strand of hair. This piece will be used to form the knot.
  3. Form the Loop:
    • Flip the isolated small piece of hair over to the left side of the braid.
    • Place this flipped piece on top of your two fingers (typically your index and middle fingers) on your left hand, forming a small loop against the braid.
  4. Pull Through and Tighten:
    • Flip the same small piece over to the right side.
    • Pull it through the loop you created with your fingers, effectively starting to form a knot.
    • Gently but firmly pull on the ends of the small piece to tighten the knot securely against the main braid. Ensure it's snug enough to hold without being overly tight and causing tension.

Enhancing Knot Security

For extra security and to ensure your knots remain intact for an extended period, especially for active individuals or those with hair prone to unraveling, consider this additional step:

  • Split and Re-tie: After you have formed and tightened the initial knot, split the small piece of hair that you used for the knot into two separate sections. Then, tie these two sections together one more time, creating a double knot. This significantly reinforces the hold and reduces the chances of the knot loosening over time.

By following these steps, you can effectively and securely tie the ends of your box braids, ensuring a durable and neat finish to your hairstyle.
