How to Take Care of Wavy Extensions?

Published in Hair Extensions Care 3 mins read

Taking care of wavy hair extensions involves gentle maintenance to preserve their wave pattern and longevity. Here's how to keep your wavy extensions looking their best:

Washing and Conditioning

  • Wash Regularly: Cleanse your extensions regularly to remove impurities and product buildup. How often depends on how much product you use and your activity level.
  • Use Sulfate-Free Products: Opt for sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners. Sulfates can strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and damage. Oil-based shampoos and conditioners can also weaken the extension bonds (wefts or tapes).
  • Wash Gently: When washing, gently massage the shampoo into the scalp and then smooth it down the length of the extensions. Avoid rubbing or tangling the hair.
  • Condition Thoroughly: Apply conditioner from the mid-shaft to the ends of the extensions. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing.
  • Rinse Carefully: Ensure you rinse all products completely from the extensions to prevent buildup.

Drying and Styling

  • Avoid Sleeping with Wet Hair: Never sleep with wet extensions. This can cause tangling and damage.
  • Gently Remove Excess Water: After washing, gently squeeze out excess water or use a microfiber towel to blot the extensions dry. Avoid rubbing vigorously.
  • Air Dry or Use Low Heat: Allow the extensions to air dry as much as possible. If you must use a hairdryer, use a low heat setting and a diffuser to help maintain the wave pattern.
  • Avoid Combing When Wet: Hair, especially extensions, is more vulnerable when wet. Avoid combing or brushing your extensions when they're wet to prevent breakage and stretching.

Brushing and Detangling

  • Use a Wide-Tooth Comb or Extension Brush: Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush specifically designed for extensions to gently detangle the hair.
  • Start from the Ends: Begin detangling from the ends of the extensions and work your way up to the roots.
  • Hold the Base: When brushing near the attachment points (wefts, tapes, etc.), hold the base of the extensions to prevent pulling or loosening.

General Maintenance

  • Store Properly: When not in use, store your extensions in a cool, dry place, preferably on a hanger or in a silk bag to prevent tangling and damage.
  • Minimize Heat Styling: Excessive heat can damage extensions. Reduce the frequency of using styling tools like curling irons or straighteners. When you do use heat, always apply a heat protectant spray.
  • Avoid Oil-Based Products Near Attachment Points: Applying oil-based products near the wefts, tapes, or other attachment methods can weaken the adhesive or bonds.
  • Regular Maintenance Appointments: If you have professionally installed extensions, schedule regular maintenance appointments with your stylist to ensure they are properly cared for and adjusted.

By following these guidelines, you can keep your wavy extensions looking beautiful and extend their lifespan.
