Hair is formed in the hair follicles, which are tiny pockets located in the skin. These follicles originate in the first and second layers of your skin, the epidermis and dermis, and sometimes extend into the third layer, the subcutaneous tissue.
- Epidermis: This is the outermost layer of skin, responsible for providing protection.
- Dermis: This layer lies beneath the epidermis, containing blood vessels, nerves, and hair follicles.
- Subcutaneous Tissue: This is the deepest layer of skin, providing insulation and cushioning.
Within the hair follicle, new cells are constantly formed at the base, called the hair bulb. These cells stick together to form a strand of hair that grows upwards, pushing older cells out of the follicle.
The hair follicle plays a vital role in hair growth and repair. It helps to repair your skin after a wound or injury.
