How to Do a French Twist with a Hair Tie?

Published in Hair styling 2 mins read

While a traditional French twist typically relies on pins to secure the style, you can create a modified, looser version using a hair tie, often for a more casual look. Here's how:

  1. Start with a Ponytail: Gather your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. Secure it with a hair tie. This provides the anchor for your twist.

  2. Loosen and Create a Pocket: Loosen the ponytail slightly above the hair tie. This creates a space or pocket where you will tuck the ponytail.

  3. Begin Twisting: Begin twisting the ponytail upwards, towards the crown of your head. Keep it relatively tight as you twist.

  4. Tuck and Secure: Once you've twisted the hair most of the way up, tuck the ends of the ponytail into the pocket you created earlier, above the hair tie.

  5. Secure the Twist: Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you might need additional support. Use bobby pins to secure the twist along the back of your head, pinning into the twisted hair and against your head to provide support. You can also adjust the tightness and shape of the twist to your preference at this point.

Tips for Success:

  • Hair Texture: This style often works best on hair that isn't freshly washed, as it tends to hold better with a little bit of texture.
  • Hair Length: Medium to long hair is ideal for this technique.
  • Hair Tie Placement: The initial ponytail placement will influence where the twist sits. Experiment to find what looks best for you.
  • Practice: It might take a few tries to perfect the technique. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't look perfect the first time.
