Is Steak Not Halal?

Published in Halal Food 2 mins read

Whether steak is halal depends on the sourcing and preparation of the meat. It's not inherently non-halal.

Halal, in Islamic terms, refers to what is permissible or lawful. For meat to be considered halal, it must adhere to specific guidelines:

  • Permissible Animal: The animal must be one that is permissible to consume according to Islamic law. Cows, from which steak is derived, are generally considered halal.
  • Slaughter Method: The animal must be slaughtered according to Islamic rites. This typically involves a swift, humane cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery, and trachea with a sharp knife, while reciting a prayer (Tasmiya or Shahada).
  • Blood Drainage: The animal's blood must be completely drained from the carcass.
  • No Cross-Contamination: The meat must not come into contact with non-halal products (e.g., pork) during processing or storage.

Therefore, steak can be halal if it comes from a halal-slaughtered animal and is processed and handled according to Islamic guidelines.

Controversies Regarding Certain Cuts:

Some opinions exist, primarily on certain food websites, suggesting that the hindquarters of the animal might be haram. However, this view is not universally accepted and is not explicitly stated in the Quran. Many halal-certified meat companies sell steaks derived from the hindquarters (e.g., sirloin, round steak). These concerns usually arise due to the difficulty in removing all blood from the hindquarters veins. However, proper halal slaughtering methods and processing aim to address this concern.

In summary: Most steaks can be halal, but you need to be certain of its source and preparation. Look for halal certifications from reputable organizations.
