A BIOS battery, also known as a CMOS battery, is a small, coin-sized battery found on a computer's motherboard that provides power to the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) or CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) chip when the computer is turned off. This battery plays a vital role in maintaining essential system settings.

The BIOS battery has two primary functions:

When to Replace the BIOS Battery

As computers age, the BIOS battery will lose its charge and eventually need to be replaced. Common signs that your BIOS battery might need replacing include:

  • Incorrect Date and Time: If your system clock resets frequently or is incorrect upon booting.
  • BIOS Settings Resets: If you notice the computer is not booting to your preferred drive or has lost other configurations.
  • Boot Errors: Certain booting errors can also signify a faulty BIOS battery.
  • Age: Typically, a BIOS battery lasts for several years, usually 5-10, depending on usage.

How to Replace a BIOS Battery

  1. Power Off and Unplug: Turn off your computer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Open the Computer: Carefully open your computer case to gain access to the motherboard.
  3. Locate the Battery: Identify the circular CR2032 battery, as mentioned, which will be held in place by a clip.
  4. Remove the Old Battery: Gently pry out the old battery using a small tool or your fingernail.
  5. Install New Battery: Install the new CR2032 battery, making sure the positive (+) side is facing up.
