Why Can't We Pick Our Nose?

Published in Health and Hygiene 2 mins read

We can pick our nose, but it's not a great idea, and here's why:

While it might seem harmless, nose picking can actually be quite problematic. It’s not that we're physically *unable* to do it. The issue lies with the potential negative consequences and health risks involved. Our noses are sensitive and play a vital role in filtering the air we breathe.

Potential Dangers of Nose Picking

Here's a breakdown of why excessive or forceful nose-picking is discouraged:

  • Introduction of Germs: Our fingers and nails can harbor germs and bacteria. Introducing these into the nasal passages can increase the risk of infections.
  • Damage to Nasal Lining: The delicate lining of the nose is easily irritated and damaged. Repeated picking can cause abrasions, sores, and even nosebleeds.
  • Increased Infection Risk: According to recent information, frequent nose picking can lead to a perforation between the nostrils and increase the risk of an infection, such as Staphylococcus, particularly for those with compromised immune systems or who are already sick.
  • Perforated Septum: As noted, consistently picking at your nose may cause a hole in the septum (the cartilage that separates the nostrils) which requires medical attention.

Why Avoid Nose Picking

The dangers can be serious, and the best approach is to avoid the habit as much as possible.

While we *can* physically pick our nose, it is better to refrain from doing so due to the numerous health risks involved. Keeping hands away from your face, especially your nose, contributes significantly to better hygiene.
